The Department of English and American Studies currently offers two master's programmes:

Additional admission requirements

In addition to the general requirements for admission at the University of Vienna (see infobox on the right), applicants for our MA programmes need to meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in English Studies (or a related field) from an internationally recognised university AND
  • Applicants whose 1st language is not English must provide evidence of their written and spoken English skills (English language proficiency at CEFR level C1 or higher). The following are acceptable:
    • Degree diploma and transcript of records/diploma supplement
      • of a degree programme of at least two years,
      • taught entirely in English,
      • at a university in an EU/EEA country, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, the USA, Australia, New Zealand or Canada OR
    • Official results of one of the following proficiency exams (no older than 3 years):
      • TOEFL: 110 points or higher
      • IELTS Academic: Overall Band Score: 8 (at least 7.5 per component)
      • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Grade A
      • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): Grade C or higher

Candidates from other universities

Due to the large number of applications sent in every semester, the admission procedure may take a long time to complete. We therefore recommend that you apply as early as possible!
