Consultation options

We have developed a tool to help you asses a possible switch. This tool is meant to provide you with some preliminary information and does not constitute binding advice! Our Hilfstabelle gives you insights on the possible recognition of courses between the old Teacher Education Program (BEd/MEd) and the new shorter version (starting October 2026). Please always consult with all service units responsible for your study programme (SSS / SSC)!

For individual consultations, we will be available on Thursdays, 13-14 am (open door policy) at the SSS office, starting March 5th. In addition, you can get in touch with us during our usual opening/telephone hours. However, we kindly ask you to keep our general office hours free for students with other concerns, if possible.

Switching to the new curriculum

Whether a switch is beneficial for your studies or not is highly individual and depends on your progress not only in UF Englisch, but also in the other two parts of your studies (UF 2 and ABG).

To get preliminary information regarding UF Englisch, you can use our UF Englisch Switch Assessment Tool.

Here are a few general recommendations regarding UF English:

  • If you started your studies in the winter term 2025/26, please focus on completing the STEOP and VO Language in a Social Context (LASC) (from Module 04 English Studies: Basics) before you switch. Otherwise, your STEOP UF Englisch cannot be recognised.
  • If you have been assigned the Latin supplementary exam upon admission and have not completed it yet, you still need to take the exam after the switch to the new curriculum.
In case you have already successfully completed the Latin exam, you do not need to retake it. For questions or problems with the Latin supplementary exam, please get in touch with our colleagues from the SSS Klass. Phil. at sss.klassphil@univie.ac.at.
  • The VELT is even more important in the new curriculum, as you need it for further courses (UE Integrated Language and Study Skills, UE mit Laborpraktikum Spoken Production, Interaction and Fluency and KU Fachdidaktik ELT Methodology in Practice 1) instead of just one (UE Integrated Language and Study Skills 1). If you have already completed VELT successfully, further recognition of the test after the transfer to the new curriculum is not necessary. Please note that the validity of the VELT ist still important (cf. VELT webpage).
  • If you are already enrolled in the MEd, we do not recommend switching. The new curriculum takes away most of the options you have for individualising your study path (more course types e.g. VO, AR and a broader variety of specialisation fields). Also, the duration of your studies (concerning UF Englisch) will proably not be shorter.

In general, please be aware of the following, if you want to stay in the old curriculum:

  • A change in the combination of teaching subjects was only possible in the summer term 2026, if you would wish to stay in the old programme. Students switching in the winter semester will need to transfer to the new curriculum with all teaching subjects.
  • Students who have discontinued their studies in the summer term 2026 or will resume their studies in the winter semester 26/27 after having previously deregistered from the degree programme will be admitted to the new curriculum.

FAQ General Questions

/

  • By when do I need to decide if I want to switch or not? Is a switch possible in SoSe27 (or later) too?

Starting on (NEW!) 3 August 2026, you can apply for the switch to the new curriculum. The new programme will start on 1 October 2026. We strongly recommend that you receive all outstanding grades before the official switch in October; simply to avoid any issues with the recognition of the grades for your new programme. You may also switch at a later point in one of the following semesters and continue completing courses in the old BEd programme in the meantime.

If you wish to stay in the old programme you need to complete your programme by the following deadlines:

    BEd: 31 March 2031

    MEd: 31 March 2029

  • Will all courses from the old curriculum be offered until 2031, or can equivalent courses from the new curriculum be taken if old courses are no longer offered?

We will offer the old courses, based on our students’ demand to ensure anyone who wants to complete the old BEd/MEd UF Englisch has the chance to do so. The new courses do not count towards the old Teacher Education Programme at our department, unless stated otherwise on u:find/u:space.

  • Why do the new courses not count towards the old Teacher Education Programme at the English Department?

Since the new programme has been significantly shortened, most of the courses have been completely restructured during the process of designing the curriculum. You may think that some course titles/descriptions sound similar; however, the changes in terms of content or course workload have been significantly altered in most cases. Therefore, the majority of the new courses do not correspond to the ones in the old programme.

  • Are you allowed to write both bachelor’s and master’s theses in the same subject?

Yes, if you wish to complete your bachelor’s thesis in “UF Englisch”, you will need to complete Block IIa in “BEd UF Englisch”. You can also decide to then write your master’s thesis in “UF Englisch”, once you are enrolled in the MEd. In this case, you need to complete the course SE Thesis Seminar for English Teachers (6 ECTS). Make sure to register the topic of your thesis before registering for the course!

  • How can I register for courses from the new Teacher Education Programme (“UF Englisch”) in the autumn?

Students switching to the new curriculum are advised to finalise the process by 30 August to ensure a smooth registration for courses with continuous assessment in September. More information under Registration Period.

Please register for the new courses with the new study programme.

Students who fail to switch on time for the regular registration period can make use of our late registration period in October.

FAQ BEd (UF Englisch)

/

  • What will the structure of the STEOP “UF Englisch” be in the new curriculum (a joint exam for two lectures or separate exams)?

The STEOP “UF Englisch” exam will still be a joint exam, covering the lectures VO Introduction to Linguistics and English Language Teaching (3 ECTS) and VO Introduction to the Study of Literature and Culture (3 ECTS).

  • Is it possible to complete Block IIb already in the BEd? What happens if I write two BEd-theses in each Block IIa?

You can take courses in Block IIa in both subjects during the BEd. For the graduation of the BEd, you need to complete Block IIa in one of your subjects. The additional courses in Block IIa in your other subject will be considered for the MEd as Block IIb.

Example: Alex M. is enrolled in the BEd UF Englisch and UF Deutsch. Alex has taken courses for Block IIa in both of her subjects but wishes to complete Block IIa in UF Deutsch and use this module towards her graduation. Any courses, which Alex has completed for Block IIa in UF Englisch and were not used towards the BEd, will be used towards Block IIb in the MEd. If Alex has completed Block IIa in both subjects, upon finishing the BEd, they need to choose the subject in which they use Block IIa.

  • UF Englisch is my 3rd subject (BEd Erweiterungsstudium). What applies in my case regarding the new curriculum?

In order to complete your Erweiterungsstudium BEd “UF Englisch” in the new curriculum you need to complete Block I and Block IIa in “UF Englisch”. After finalizing your main combination and the Erweiterungsstudium, you can enrol in the MEd UF Englisch, where you only need to take Block III.

  • Can I have my old STEOP “UF Englisch” recognised for the STEOP “UF Englisch” in the new curriculum?

It depends. The new STEOP can only be recognised as a combination of the old STEOP “UF Englisch” and the exam for Language in a Social Context (LASC) (M04). Since the new STEOP includes parts of the field of Sociolinguistics, which are not covered in the old lecture VO Introduction to English Linguistics, the recognition is only possible as a package. However, if you have completed both the old STEOP “UF Englisch” and the LASC exam, not only will you have the STEOP “UF Englisch” recognised, but the new course VO Linguistic Structures and their Functions, too.

  • Does the CFT still exist?

Yes, the CFT (Common Final Test) is also part of the new curriculum as the final exam in the course UE Argumentation and Critical Thinking (5 ECTS).

  • What does the recognition process for students enrolled both in the BEd “UF Englisch” and BA English and American Studies look like?

Students who have completed courses in the new BEd or BA English and American Studies, and need to apply for a recognition, are kindly asked to get in touch with the SSS Anglistik for more information. Please send your transcript of records and indicate whether you wish to apply for a recognition towards the BA English and American Studies or BEd “UF Englisch”. The SSS Anglistik will let you know what the next steps are.

  • Does the switch from one programme to the other (BEd “UF Englisch” to BA English and American Studies or vice versa) change with the new curriculum?

No. If you wish to enrol in one of the two programmes, you simply need to adhere to the admission procedure and prerequisites which apply to each programme. Being enrolled in one of the two programmes does not substitute the application and admission process.

FAQ MEd (UF Englisch)

/

  • If I have completed the BEd in the old curriculum and then enrol in the new MEd, do I still have to complete Block IIb in the master’s programme?

No, Block IIb can be recognised in its entirety, and you do not have to take it in the MEd “UF Englisch”. Please check our Hilfstabelle and recognition regulation for more information on the possible recognition.

  • If the BEd was completed at another university, will courses be recognised in the new master’s programme at the University of Vienna?

Yes, if you have not completed your BEd programme at the University of Vienna but at a different university, you will need to apply for a recognition towards Block IIb. Please send your transcript to recognition.anglistik@univie.ac.at. We will let you know, which courses can be recognised so that you can formally apply for the recognition. Recognition process.

  • In the new MEd, do I still have to complete both the master’s thesis and the master’s exam?

Yes, you can decide whether you wish to write your thesis in “UF Englisch” or in your other subject. If you are writing your thesis in “UF Englisch”, you need to complete the master’s exam in this subject. .

  • Are there any non-continuous assessment (non-PI) courses in the new Master’s in the winter semester?

The new MEd “UF Englisch” includes only one lecture course in Block IIb - VO Text, Genre and Discourse in Language Teaching (4 ECTS). If you have completed the old BEd “UF Englisch”, this class will be recognised. Therefore, we recommend starting with the MEd in the winter semester 26/27 to ensure an unproblematic registration for courses with continuous assessment during the registration period in September 26.

  • If I choose Block IIb in the MEd for the subject English, must the master’s thesis also be written in English (UE English)?

No. If you have completed Block IIa in your other subject in the BEd, you must complete Block IIb in “UF Englisch”. However, you can freely decide in which subject you wish to write the master’s thesis.

  • “UF Englisch” is my 3rd subject (MEd Erweiterungsstudium). Do I need to complete a master’s exam or a master’s thesis for this subject?

No. If “UF Englisch” is your third subject, there is no final thesis or master’s exam that you need to complete in this subject
