The Department of English and American Studies currently offers two master's programmes:

Additional admission requirements

In addition to the general requirements for admission at the University of Vienna (see infobox on the right), applicants for our MA programmes need to meet the following criteria:

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in English Studies (or a related field) from an internationally recognised university AND
  • Applicants whose 1st language is not English must provide evidence of their written and spoken English skills (English language proficiency at CEFR level C1 or higher). The following are acceptable:
    • A degree from a university in an EU member state, the EEA or Switzerland which was taught entirely in English OR
    • Official results of one of the following proficiency exams (no older than 3 years):
      • TOEFL: ibt (internet-based): minimum 110 points; paper-based: minimum 627 points
      • IELTS academic: Overall Band Score 8 (+ minimum of 7.5 per component)
      • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): grade A
      • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): grade C or higher


All matters regarding admission are handled by the central Admission Office.

Candidates from other universities

Due to the large number of applications sent in every semester, the admission procedure may take a long time to complete. We therefore recommend that you apply as early as possible!
