Latin qualification

In order to graduate from our department, you need an additional qualification in Latin.

  • If you have successfully completed at least ten hours of Latin per week at a secondary school, the additional Latin examination is not required. You have to prove this by providing your school transcripts  during the personal admission.
  • If you did not study Latin in school, it is sufficient to pass the additional exam in Latin during the degree programme. The additional exam may not be the last exam of your degree programme.

If you do not have the required proof, the need to pass the additional exam will be specified during the admission procedure. This will be stated in your student record sheet (Studienblatt).

The additional exam can be passed by using the offered courses of the Department for Classical Philology.

From June 2025 onward, you can receive additional ECTS points (2 x 6 ECTS) by completing  „Einführung in das Latein I“ (6 ECTS, 6 SWS) and/or „Einführung in das Latein II“ (6 ECTS, 6 SWS). The ECTS count towards the Miniumum Number of Credits. However, you cannot use the ECTS from these courses towards your English studies (e.g. Alternative Erweiterungen, Wahlbereich)! In order to fulfill the Latin-prerequisite, you have to successfully pass the exam  „Einführung in das Latein II“.

You can find more information about the changes and what they mean for your study on the Department for Classical Philology's webpage (in German).
