Registration (Courses & Exams)
Whether you are a first-year student gearing up for your STEOP exams, registering for regular courses, or organising a course swap, you will find all essential deadlines and guidelines right here on this page. Please remember to use your official u:net student email for all correspondence with the SSS and include your student ID number.
You can scroll through the sections below or use the navigation menu to jump directly to the topic you need.
Registration periods for courses
- All registrations are done in u:space.
- A full list of courses offered each semester can be found in the Course Directory in u:find.
- Students can repeat courses within 12 months of receiving a positive grade for the same course. Repeating the course at a later point is not possible.
Registration procedure
If students get registered for a course or not, is based on their progress according to the recommended path of study:
Registration for capacity-limited courses is determined by the number of points you allocate during the registration period. Each semester, students receive 1000 points per department to distribute among courses with continuous assessment. The system works like a bidding process: the more points you allocate, the higher your chance of being admitted to your preferred course or group. If you are enrolled in both the MEd and the MA, you receive a total of 1000 points for courses offered by our department (not 1000 per program). Unused points do not carry over to the next semester; they expire.
Registering for exams
In the course directory u:find, you can view the details of the exam for your respective course.
Click ‘Register/Deregister for this exam’ to be redirected to u:space where you can complete your registration.
Next, you have to select your degree programme and the respective curriculum item (module) in u:space. If you can choose from several modules, select the one that is specified in the u:find course directory. Otherwise, your grade will be assigned to the wrong module in the record of examinations.
Click ‘Register’ to complete your registration for the exam.
For exams offered by the English Department (SPL 12), the registration ends one week before the exam. For more details, please check the exam entry on u:find.
In case of illness
If you can't come to a lecture exam that you registered for because you're ill and it's too late for you to deregister, send a doctor's note to the SSS Anglistik and we will do this for you.
Do you need an overview of all exams taking place at the English Department?
Course swap
Swapping course spots is possible either with a swap partner or with a free spot in another parallel course/group, provided you and your swapping partner have received a fixed place in the course of your request.
Course Swap Period (Winter Semester 26/27)
6.10. (00:00) until 7.10. (23:59)
-
Step 1:
Find a fellow student who wants to swap into the course group you are registered for.
-
Step 2:
You and your partner need to write an email and state your intent to swap places.
- subject line “Kurstausch: [CourseCode CourseName]” from your u:net account – all other emails will not be answered, please put your colleague’s email address in CC. Reminder: Both of you need to send an e-mail for the swap to be taken into consideration.
- include your name and student ID number, the course and group you are in and the same information from your swapping partner.
-
Step 3:
The swap will come into effect only after all involved parties have sent a confirmation email from their university e-mail-account
IMPORTANT: after the swap has been processed, please inform your lecturers so that they can add you to the corresponding Moodle course.
Late registration period (Nachmeldephase)
Students who could not register for courses at the English Department during the regular registration period may do so during the late registration period. All remaining places will be allocated to students who meet the course requirements and have applied via email as per the instructions.
Important: You may only register for remaining places if you meet all prerequisites for the respective course(s) according to the curriculum, in which you are enrolled.
Students from other departments may also register during the late registration period. The registration is possible only with prior approval from SPL12. Students from the English Department take precedence in the allocation.
Remaining course places (Restplätze) Period
on 12.10., 14.10., and 16.10. (between 13:00-14:00)
Available places
- The list of available places is posted in News & Events on the morning of the first late registration date and updated on each of the three dates.
- Only courses that have held no more than one session are eligible.
- Courses with no free places or with more than one session already held are not offered.
Email rules
- Multiple emails for the same course do not increase your chances of getting a spot and may lead to your request being disregarded. Submit one complete email per course within the time window.
- If several groups/parallel courses are available, list your preferences in that one email. Do not send separate emails for different groups of the same course.
- Do not apply for multiple courses in one email. If you wish to register for more than one course, send a separate email per course.
When and how to apply
- Send an email from your university u:net account to sss.anglistik(at)univie.ac.at.
- Subject: Restplatz
- You can also use our email template (please alter the text to fit your request).
- Time window: 13:00–14:00 on the announced dates (emails sent outside the window will not be processed).
Processing and allocation
- First‑come, first‑served, based on the email's receipt time.
- Processing may extend beyond the hour; all valid requests from that window are processed before the next slot.
- The list of free places will be updated before the next slot.
Validity of registration
- Only registrations visible in u:space are valid. Moodle enrolment without u:space registration does not entitle you to a grade.

Special cases & regulations
Board exams ("kommissionelle Wiederholungsprüfungen") are the fourth (last) attempt at lecture exams and courses.
- For STEOP exams, you must register no later than two weeks before the exam date. Please enter your personal details in the pre-prepared forms (Anmeldung and Prüfungsprotokoll, available on Moodle) and submit them to the SSS Anglistik.
- For all other board exams, the registration deadline is three weeks before the exam. Please complete the forms Anmeldung and Prüfungsprotokoll (below) and contact the SSS Anglistik.
If you need to deregister, you can do so up to one week before the exam by contacting the SSS Anglistik.
The system will not let you sign up if it is your 4th (last) attempt at a course with continuous assessment. You will see that the registration status is incorrect - please enter your registration on u:space nonetheless. After you have entered your preferences (Parallelveranstaltungen), please write an e-mail to the SSS Anglistik during the registration period (for MA/MEd students - please include how many points you want to spend). The SSS can then change the status of your registration. Please make sure to inform your teacher at the beginning of the course that this is your last attempt.

Student parents can register for courses via special regulation during the registration phase if the following conditions are met: Child is 3 years or younger OR Child is 10 years or younger & student parent is working full time.
Please email sss.anglistik(at)univie.ac.at BEFORE the start of the registration period and include scans of the following documents to confirm your student parent status:
- Child's birth certificate
- Residence registration form (Meldezettel) of the child AND parent
- Confirmation of professional activity indicating number of working hours per week (if child is older than 3 years)
Having done that, register for the courses you would like to attend at the very beginning of the registration phase via u:space and immediately send an e-mail to the SSS Anglistik with the request for registration. The SSS will allocate you to the course/group of your choice.
If you do not fulfill the requirements to attend a specific course or exam you can seek permission from the SPL 12 to do so regardless. Please note that the SPL permission can only be granted by the director of studies in very specific cases to avoid extreme delays in completing the study programme. Students will be required to provide documentation and reasoning for the permission. For questions, please contact the SPL team directly.
Once you have received the permission, please let the SSS Anglistik staff know well in advance (before or during the registration period) by writing an email from your u:net address, specifying the reason and forwarding the SPL's email with the permission.
Depending on the case and course in question, you may be granted permission to register in the normal or in the late registration period. A course spot cannot be guaranteed.
The SPL permission applies only to courses offered at the English Department!
