Recognition
What does ‘recognition’ mean?
The term ‘recognition’ refers to a process in which achievements that you have not completed as part of your current degree programme are taken into account in your current degree programme. You have to apply for recognition. This is only possible if you have an official notice of admission to a degree programme at the University of Vienna. The directorate of studies decides whether achievements can be recognised.
For further information about types of achievements that can be recognised as well as recognition and validation topics, please see the website of the Office of the Studienpräses.

Get advice
Please inform yourself, whether a recognition is possible before handing in your application. You can contact the Recognition Team via recognition.anglistik(at)univie.ac.at. Please include your official transcript of records and information towards which programme(s)/course(s) you would like to get a recognition.
The recognition process is an official process and in order to avoid negative consequences (e.g. rejection of the application), a consultation is strongly recommended.
Special case: recognition regulations
A recognition regulation determines which courses are recognised for credit transfer between two degree programmes.
If a recognition regulation exists for your case, you do not have to apply for recognition.

When do I need an allocation of credits?
If you have completed a course within the same study programme, but the grade was entered in the wrong module, the grade has to be moved, not recognised. For this, please contact the StudentServiceUnit Anglistik - the team can help you with moving the grade.
For students in the BA English and American Studies: if you have completed a grade, which has to be moved to a certain EC, please contact the SSC/SSS, offering this EC module.
FAQ Recognition
You can apply for a recognition of courses completed at internationally recognised post-secondary education institutions, i.e. universities and colleges, including universities of applied science (FHs) and university colleges of teacher education (PHs).
Additionally, work experience, and competences acquired outside universities may be recognised as long as they cover the goals of the module/course in question. Please check the information on the Validation process for more information.
We cannot recognise additional study requirements such as the Latin exam (Lateinergänzungsprüfung), the VELT (Vienna English Language Test) or proof of C1 language proficiency in German or English.
In general, the entire process (from submitting your application to receiving the final documents) may take up to 8 weeks. This official timeframe may be extended if documents are missing and/or if we require further information. Please check your email account regularly for updates from the Recognition Team.
For a recognition based on an Anerkennungsverordnung (AVO, recognition regulation), there is no official time limit. However, as this type of recognition is usually easy to process, applications covered by an AVO tend to be completed within 8 weeks as well, if not sooner.
Once you receive your recognition certificate, you have up to 4 weeks to check if everything is entered correctly. The document you receive becomes legally binding (rechtskräftig) only after 4 weeks have passed. If you need the grades urgently, please carefully check the document for mistakes and notify the Recognition Team that you wish to withdraw your right to appeal against the document. This makes the documents legally binding earlier so that you can receive your grades immediately.
Please check the information on Outgoing students. For questions about the recognition of your courses, please consult with our exchange coordinator Mag. Charlotte Viola at erasmus.anglisitik@univie.ac.at.
It depends. If you discontinued your studies, you only need to get your grades recognised if you entered a new curriculum when you resumed your studies.
In case you are enrolled in the same programme and there have been no changes in the curriculum in the meantime, your grades will be visible once you are actively enrolled.
Please read the information on the possible recognition of courses towards the EC The World of English.
You will need to fill out the application for recognition and send it to recognition.anglistik(at)univie.ac.at. Before you do this, please sign up for the EC module on u:space (under “Courses”→”Extension Curricula”→ “Register for new EC”).
If you have completed courses at a different university or department, in the field of English studies, you need to consult with the Recognition Team if a recognition of your classes towards the ECs is possible.
Please highlight the EC courses in your transcript of records and send it to the Recognition Team. You will get further instructions how to proceed with the application for recognition.
You can use any classes you have completed at a different degree programme at the University of Vienna or another internationally recognised post-secondary education institution. You can apply for a recognition of 15 ECTS in total.
To apply, you can use our application form, which you have to fill out and send us together with your transcript of records. You cannot use work experience towards the AE module.

Recognition forms - technical problems?
Even after careful preparation and testing, we unfortunately cannot guarantee that every PDF reader will handle our recognition forms correctly. If you encounter any technical problems (drop-downs not showing, no line breaks in text boxes, …) you can use the computers in our library to fill them out. If you need to do so, please bear in mind:
- to adhere to the library etiquette (esp. the mandatory use of lockers)
- that, if you want to save the filled-out form, you need to bring your own storage device
there is a u:print device available - that the computers in the library are openly accessible and that, if you locally save something, the information can be viewed by the next user
If you continue to experience problems, please do not hesitate to contact us.
