English and American Studies

Student services during my BEd UF Englisch studies

Generally speaking, there are three main offices, which are involved in the administrative processes, directly connected to your studies. The SSS Anglistik (Studies Service Unit for students of English and American Studies) is responsible for issues and questions concerning your studies at the Department of English and American studies. The SPL Anglistik (Studienprogrammleitung 12) is the directorate of studies at the English Department. The SSC Phil.-Kult., the Studies Service Center, is responsible for all study programmes at our faculty.

Study programme structure

The BEd comprises six semesters and forms the first part of a consecutive BA+MA programme totalling at least ten semesters. On entry, you choose either two teaching subjects or one teaching subject plus a specialisation.

Teaching subjects and specialisations are organised into three blocks (see below). Successful completion of the Bachelor qualifies you to progress to the Master of Education.

Please find detailed information about the study structure and possible teaching subjects / specialisations on the Lehramt website (in German).

Comparative study structure for Bachelor (180 ECTS) and Master programmes (120 ECTS) Bachelor structure: Teaching Subject 1 and 2 (each 60 ECTS subject knowledge and didactics in Block 1), Block 2 (25 ECTS), ABG module (15 ECTS General Educational Science, marked PPS). Master structure: Block 2 and 3 (25 and 20 ECTS subject knowledge respectively), Final phase (30 ECTS including Master thesis). PPS = Pedagogical-Practical Studies (30 ECTS total)

  • Block I

Block I is always completed within the Bachelor, in both your teacher subjects/specialisations.

  • Block IIa/b

Block II may be taken either in the Bachelor (as IIa) or in the Master (as IIb). If you opt to complete Block IIa during the Bachelor, you place your academic focus on Teaching Subject 1 and write your Bachelor’s thesis in that subject. For UF English, you would write your thesis paper in either BA-UF EN 13a Bachelor’s Seminar in Linguistics or BA-UF EN 13b Bachelor’s Seminar in Literary and Cultural Studies.

  • Block III

Block III is always completed within the Master, in both your your teacher subjects/specialisations.
